Forty years ago, artist Alex Carver (Morgan Freeman) bought a run-down apartment in a sketchy part of Brooklyn with his wife, schoolteacher Ruth (Diane Keaton). Today, their neighborhood is now very hip and their apartment worth a small fortune. The now- retired Ruth and Alex haven't changed - they are still as much in love as ever. But they have let Ruth's niece Lily (Cynthia Nixon), a real estate agent, list their property to see what the market might bear. On the eve of their open house, the Brooklyn Bridge is rumored to be under a terrorist attack, sending the media into a frenzy and people's attitudes about living in New York. Closer to home, Dorothy, the Carver's beloved dog, is suddenly having trouble walking. While Dorothy is having expensive treatment at the vet, Ruth convinces Alex to go apartment hunting in Manhattan, where they miraculously come across an ideal place they might actually be able to afford. As the world around them seems to mirror their own chaos and confusion, Ruth and Alex realize the same bond of love that has kept them together all these years will allow them to see their way through this crazy weekend as well.(C) Focus

Name : Gerry O / Alias : Kid First
From the story line, it may seem that this film will be boring to kids. But, when I started watching this film I fell in love with it. Morgan Freeman's perfect timing of jokes and Diane Keeton's wonderful and priceless emotions make this film entertaining and heartfelt from the very start to the last second. It is a bit hard to say what the main genre is. Of course, there is a lot of romance between the two characters, Alex (Morgan Freeman) and Ruth (Diane Keeton), there is also that funny side that makes it all that more enjoyable. And, there is still a serious dramatic side which keeps you on the edge of your seat till the end. The story starts when an elderly couple, Ruth and Alex, live in a high up, massive apartment in New York City, Brooklyn actually. However, the five flight of stairs they need to take is getting more and more challenging so they decide to move to a location with an elevator. To add to the challenges, their dog is in the hospital undergoing treatment for spinal injury. The director, Richard Loncraine makes this movie feel authentic and rustic and also shows how current society stereotypes elderly people, how they truly feel about it and how wrong it is. The cast is wonderful and the acting is just superior with serious and comedy scenes mixed together and standing out all the time. I also like how they lightly touch upon problems of the past as well as problems of today. For example, Ruth and Alex got married in a time when bi- racial couples were not welcomed with open arms. Then it shows how today a gay couple is making an offer on a house. They submit it along with a note telling how they tried to adopt a child and finally were able to adopt one. It is something Ruth and Alex wanted to do when they were younger but were denied. My favorite scene is when they have an open house to sell their apartment and a huge crowd of people comes through, looking at everything and touching everything. Alex doesn't like it but Ruth tries to see the positive side but fails. I like that scene because it shows how the couple's life isn't perfect and also makes the film feel very real. Not only this moment does that but many others as well. This film has perhaps several moments of adult content but none that is too mature. I recommend it to kids ages 10 to18 and give it 5 out of 5 stars.

Name : Stephen Holden / Alias : New York Times
The lead performances are so perfectly in sync that Alex and Ruth really feel like an old married couple who know each other's foibles and cherish every tic.

Name : Tirdad Derakhshani / Alias : Philadelphia Inquirer
5 Flights Up is a sweet film with a few nicely turned lines, some good jokes, and some very lovely dialogue. But it's not much more than fluff and air.

Name : Stephanie Merry / Alias : Washington Post
"5 Flights Up" is far from perfect, but it's also undeniably touching.

Name : Pete Vonder Haar / Alias : Village Voice
What starts as a somewhat charming - if prosaic - story of love in the time of gentrification inexplicably spends most of its third act mired in the finer points of apartment hunting, like a tastefully lit HGTV show.

Name : Gary Goldstein / Alias : Los Angeles Times
What a pleasure to see a simple, finely tuned dramedy about real adults with real emotions in a real-life situation.

Name : Rex Reed / Alias : New York Observer
It's good to see first-rate artists devoted to a film that doesn't pander to an unsophisticated audience with a thirst for violence and smut.

Name : Mike D'Angelo / Alias : AV Club
If 5 Flights Up is worth seeing, it's primarily for the pleasure of Keaton and Freeman's company, plus maybe for some tips on buying and selling an apartment.

Name : Graham Fuller / Alias : New York Daily News
Diane Keaton and Morgan Freeman are pleasantly entertaining in "5 Flights Up." But the movie's far too pleasant for far too long.

Name : Richard Roeper / Alias : Chicago Sun-Times
Sometimes you see a play and you can imagine it being a movie. Sometimes you see a small movie like this, and you can imagine it working better as an intimate stage play.

Name : John Anderson / Alias : Newsday
A couple of pros, playing attractive characters in an amiable yet topical story.

Name : Peter Keough / Alias : Boston Globe
The duo provide a bit of wit and warmth amid the contrived subplots and the self-satisfied moralism.

Name : Isabella Biedenharn / Alias : Entertainment Weekly
Based on Jill Ciment's wry novel Heroic Measures, the film is at its best when it sticks with the everyday .

Name : John Hartl / Alias : Seattle Times
The movie ends just as you expected it to end, and there are almost no surprises along the way.

Name : Christy Lemire / Alias : RogerEbert.com
What begins as a sweetly sentimental story ends up being cloyingly melodramatic.

Name : Lou Lumenick / Alias : New York Post
Morgan Freeman and Diane Keaton have unexpectedly great chemistry in this warm and funny comedy about a couple who contemplate leaving a walk-up apartment in Brooklyn they've occupied for their entire 40-year marriage.

Growing up can be a bumpy road, and it's no exception for Riley, who is uprooted from her Midwest life when her father starts a new job in San Francisco. Like all of us, Riley is guided by her emotions - Joy (Amy Poehler), Fear (Bill Hader), Anger (Lewis Black), Disgust (Mindy Kaling) and Sadness (Phyllis Smith). The emotions live in Headquarters, the control center inside Riley's mind, where they help advise her through everyday life. As Riley and her emotions struggle to adjust to a new life in San Francisco, turmoil ensues in Headquarters. Although Joy, Riley's main and most important emotion, tries to keep things positive, the emotions conflict on how best to navigate a new city, house and school.

Name : Maricar Estrella / Alias : Fort Worth Star-Telegram/DFW.com
Directors Pete Docter ( Monsters, Inc .; Up) and Ronnie del Carmen ( Dug's Special Mission) have created a masterful study of family dynamics. Like the Oscar-winning Up, Inside Out takes great care in weaving complex ideas into a children's tale.

Name : Mick LaSalle / Alias : San Francisco Chronicle
In the course of the whole year, there will probably be no American movie so concerned with looking inside, and so interested in the components of a meaningful life, as "Inside Out."

Name : Peter Travers / Alias : Rolling Stone
Pixar's tour of an 11-year-old girl's head is a flat-out masterpiece that proves live action doesn't have dibs on cinematic art. Oh, did I say it was funny? It is, uproariously so, when you're not brushing away a tear.

Name : Christy Lemire / Alias : ChristyLemire.com
This is a movie that dares to explore existential crises, in the middle of the summer, in an animated movie that's aimed at the whole family

Name : Joe Neumaier / Alias : New York Daily News
Whatever brainstorm led the Pixar folks to "Inside Out," they've created the most extraordinary film of the year.

Name : Liam Lacey / Alias : Globe and Mail
Inside Out is imaginative and ambitious, even if it sometimes feels a bit manically overstuffed. And it's definitely a big step up from some recent Pixar films, such as Cars 2 and Monsters University.

Name : Eric Hynes / Alias : Village Voice
A scattershot throwback that steals elements from seedy '70s character studies, disreputable '80s vigilante flicks, even street-tough allegories from the '30s, Inside Out also dances to the confidently unhurried beat of its own drum.

Name : Steven Rea / Alias : Philadelphia Inquirer
Inside Out is the first psychological thriller that's fun for the whole family. Really psychological. And really fun.

Name : Ben Sachs / Alias : Chicago Reader
Inside Out, the latest Disney-Pixar coproduction, feels like a clever educational short stretched to feature length.

Name : Dave Calhoun / Alias : Time Out
At times, you ache to put the brakes on the chaos, but still Pixar manages to do what it does best, turning the everyday rough and smooth of childhood experience into a thoughtful, inventive adventure.

Name : Chris Nashawaty / Alias : Entertainment Weekly
A movie that's so smart and psychologically clever, it may leave little ones scratching their heads wondering why their parents are laughing so hard and getting so choked up.

Name : Alonso Duralde / Alias : TheWrap
Has moments that are as emotionally gutting as anything I've seen in a Pixar film. At the same time, I was surprised at how fleeting the experience felt.

Name : Andrew Schenker / Alias : Time Out
As bloated as its star's pectoral muscles and as lastingly resonant as any random episode of SmackDown.

Name : Andrew O'Hehir / Alias : Salon.com
A work of nifty craftsmanship and considerable complexity beneath its unassuming surface.

Name : Andrew Lapin / Alias : NPR
Inside Out isn't just a sign of renewed youth from Pixar. It's the reason Pixar exists.

Name : Daniel M. Gold / Alias : New York Times
Shooting for stoic, Mr. Levesque only delivers inert. And the plot devolves into a tangle of dithering story lines.

Name : Anthony Lane / Alias : New Yorker
On the scale of inventiveness, "Inside Out" will be hard to top this year. As so often with Pixar, you feel that you are visiting a laboratory crossed with a rainbow.

Name : Kenneth Turan / Alias : Los Angeles Times
Pixar stands alone, and "Inside Out" shows you why.

Name : Peter Debruge / Alias : Variety
Pixar's 15th feature proves to be the greatest idea the toon studio has ever had . promises to forever change the way people think about the way people think, delivering creative fireworks grounded by a wonderfully relatable family story.

Name : Ann Hornaday / Alias : Washington Post
Uncle Walt knew what he was talking about with "For every smile, a tear." With "Inside Out," the brilliant keepers of his legacy prove that it's not only good for business but also essential for the soul.

Name : Joe Neumaier / Alias : New York Daily News
Loyalties are tested and Scorsese ripped off until audiences may feel as if they're in a movie deathlock.

Name : Amy Nicholson / Alias : L.A. Weekly
This is heady stuff - a more natural fit for a black-and-white Bergman than a kiddie caper.

Name : Michael Phillips / Alias : Chicago Tribune
Perhaps Pixar will never again reach the heights of its remarkable string of masterworks, "Wall.E," "Ratatouille" and "Up." The best of "Inside Out" comes close.

Name : Gail Pennington / Alias : St. Louis Post-Dispatch
The best animated movies are made as much for the grown-ups who will accompany the children as for the kids themselves. That's certainly true of "Inside Out" .

Name : Jake Coyle / Alias : Associated Press
What's most refreshing about "Inside Out" is its inversion of the standard prescriptions of big-budget animation: It's ultimately about the importance of embracing sadness.

Name : Lou Lumenick / Alias : New York Post
A nonsensical, thickly plotted gumbo.

Name : Brian Truitt / Alias : USA Today
It's good to get your emotions in check before watching the exquisite Inside Out. You're bound to feel the whole bunch watching a child's mind come alive in the most imaginative ways.

Name : Wesley Morris / Alias : Grantland
The challenge here involves maintaining a believable humanity while also making an entertaining case that humanity is impossible without the proper emotional configuration. And in meeting that challenge, the movie keeps surprising and delighting you.

Name : Tom Long / Alias : Detroit News
It's hard to believe that anyone will make a film more ambitious and more fully realized this year than "Inside Out." Let the talk of a best picture Oscar win begin now.

Name : Roger Moore / Alias : Orlando Sentinel
Lawyer-turned-screenwriter Dylan Schaffer's script is an unhappy combination of genres, tones, too many dead stretches of people in cars and inept dialogue.

Name : Dana Stevens / Alias : Slate
Only in the medium of animation could a conceit as elaborate as Inside Out's be dramatized, and only animation this well-designed and executed could bring such a story so vibrantly to life.

Name : Bill Goodykoontz / Alias : Arizona Republic
You want to see this movie. You need to see this movie. Because "Inside Out" is terrific, a mind-bending concept turned into a brilliant film, a return to form for Pixar not just in terms of quality but in taking risks - risks that pay off.

Name : Peter Howell / Alias : Toronto Star
The magnificent head trip that is Inside Out does more than take us inside a young girl's mind. It also restores Pixar's lost magic.

Name : Lou Lumenick / Alias : New York Post
It's a totally satisfying adventure with lot of surprising twists, and one of the best emotional payoffs in the Pixar canon.

Name : Christopher Orr / Alias : The Atlantic
Welcome back, Pixar. You were sorely missed.

Name : Mary F. Pols / Alias : TIME Magazine
What makes the movie so rich and enlightening, even for an adult well acquainted with their own blue periods, is the depiction of emotions not as at war with each other but rather in a constant juggling act to keep their human going.

Name : Todd McCarthy / Alias : Hollywood Reporter
This adventurous outing manages the great Pixar trick of operating on two levels-captivating fun for kids, disarming smarts for adults-that sets the studio apart.

Name : A.O. Scott / Alias : New York Times
"Inside Out" is an absolute delight - funny and charming, fast-moving and full of surprises. It is also a defense of sorrow, an argument for the necessity of melancholy dressed in the bright colors of entertainment.

Name : James Berardinelli / Alias : ReelViews
Inside Out is the best American-produced animated film we have seen in many summers and deserves to be recognized as such.

Name : Colin Covert / Alias : Minneapolis Star Tribune
"Inside Out" is uplifting and magical, impeccably crafted and cinematically arresting, emotional and humorous beyond measure.

Name : Stephen Whitty / Alias : Newark Star-Ledger
"Inside Out" is about the passing of childhood ritual, its most bittersweet moments the ones glimpsed in a rear-view mirror, as it reminds the unfaithful: Remember when you loved that? When you lived for this? Until you didn't anymore?

Name : Tony Hicks / Alias : San Jose Mercury News
A great blend of thoughtfulness and understanding went into "Inside Out," and the outcome will likely, again, raise the bar for other studios trying to keep up.

Name : Joe Morgenstern / Alias : Wall Street Journal
As funny, stirring, unpredictable, exciting and riotously beautiful as it is profound.

Name : Ty Burr / Alias : Boston Globe
It is a joy for audiences seeking entertainment, an ingenious work of craft for those paying close attention, and a wallop of feeling that's still too rare coming from a cartoon.

Name : Moira MacDonald / Alias : Seattle Times
"Inside Out" movingly but casually plays with our emotions, like a baby walking her fingers across a parent's face; it leaves you changed, entertained, nostalgic, dazzled.

Name : A.A. Dowd / Alias : AV Club
It's not just a brilliant idea, but maybe the most conceptually daring movie the Bay Area animation house has ever produced. And that's really saying something, what with WALL-E on the books.

Name : Rene Rodriguez / Alias : Miami Herald
Kids will be engaged, but it's the older viewers - people who have lived and felt a little longer than 11-year-olds - who will most appreciate this marvelous, ingenious work of art.

Name : Nancy Churnin / Alias : Dallas Morning News
Buddy films have always been about balancing opposite urges. Here the balance mirrors not only what's needed for great art, but also for mental and spiritual healing.

Name : Lisa Kennedy / Alias : Denver Post
Not since Up, has the studio taken on the gnarliness of being human and made it so visually delightful and emotionally resonant.

Name : David Edelstein / Alias : New York Magazine/Vulture
This teeming, tear-duct-draining, exhaustingly inventive, surreal animated comedy is going to be a new pop-culture touchstone. In all kinds of ways it's a mind-opener.

Name : Peter Rainer / Alias : Christian Science Monitor
It's all very Freudian, or Jungian, or whatever, and little kids may get lost, but there's real verve in the animation and wit in the byplay.

Name : Rafer Guzman / Alias : Newsday
Only Pixar could turn a metaphor into a heart-tugging story about preteen growing pains. Absolutely brilliant.

Name : Ronnie Scheib / Alias : Variety
If many of the script's circumstances seem a bit too convenient, Mandelberg's direction provides a cavalier "what next?" verve that invites incongruity.
